About Bloom Master Australia and me.
Hi my name is Sue Korevaar and I have been involved in Horticulture for the last 17 years.
Primarily my background is growing Hydroponic vegetable crops on a commercial basis, mostly vine crops, like tomato, capsicum, cucumber, but also lettuce and most herbs. I have a love of all things gardening and will always take the time to talk about plants, gardens or anything to do with them.
Indeed I often go to garden clubs to talk about my baskets, but end up talking about plants, bugs or whatever else comes up in the conversation.
About six years ago I went to Canada, specifically Vancouver and I was blown away by the wonderful hanging baskets displayed in and around the city and indeed around the smaller townships. They were fantastic, full of wonderful colour and really big. Wow. I was determined on my return to Australia to get cracking and make some for around my home.
A couple of days later I went to a big trade show and bang, there was the Bloom Master hanging baskets, everything I needed to have to make these wonderful hanging baskets, but without the mess of the coconut liners.
So I bought the full range, much to the laughter of my fellow travellers and back to good old Melbourne I went, full of excitement and enthusiasm to create my floral wonders.
Boy did they turn out well, I had people stop by my house and ask where could they buy some. Well of course, that got me thinking and pretty soon I was the Australian importer/distributor of these wonderful planter boxes and hanging baskets.
This is a picture of one of my first attempts
I used the 12 inch basket or BM104 and planted Million bells, pansies and alyssum. Not bad, but this picture was taken only after 8-10 weeks, so it really kicked on, with the help of regular nutrient feeding.
Anyway I digress, these days I work from home in the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, where I distribute my planter boxes and hanging baskets all around Australia.
So why are they so good? Well their size, for one, they are much deeper than traditional hanging baskets and they are just so simple to plant up (see my planting instructions page), they are UV stabilised, strong and are made with good quality plastic. But the real secret (not really a secret) is the side holes. Once the seedlings have covered the sides of the basket, the foliage works to protect the plastic basket from heating up and in a nutshell that's it.
Quite simply, roots are designed to absorb water and feed the plant and when it is hot, the foliage transpires to cool the plant and so the circle works. BUT, if the outside plastic heats up and cooks the roots, bang, the cycle is broken and your plants wilt and ultimately die. I can hear you all agreeing with me. The sun here in Australia is very hot and our hanging baskets do suffer to the point where most people just give up.
The unique design (patented technology) means the potting mix will not wash out of planted or unplanted openings. Which means, if you like it is not necessary to plant every opening, this really works for some of the larger baskets. I often don't plant out the bottom row on the 12 inch basket. See below my awesome strawberry plant, here I did not plant the bottom row of side holes.
FEATURES AND BENEFITS
- USES NO MOSS OR LINERS – Use premium grade potting mix. Potting mix will not wash out of planted or unplanted openings.
- MORE VOLUME – Bloom Master Hanging Baskets are larger and have more volume than most other types of baskets. The side openings allow more oxygen into the root system. This helps keep the potting mix temperature cool. These features produce healthier plants while allowing the basket to reach maturity and stay moist longer.
- HIGH QUALITY – Manufactured of quality polypropylene these baskets and planters are of the finest quality. These products will last longer adding value to the consumer. Municipal and Commercial users can expect years of use from the 35.5cm (14") basket and the 51cm (20") Planter Box.
- UV STABILISED – All our planters have been UV stabilised to maintain their shape and function throughout their natural life, even when exposed to the harsh Australian sun and wind.
